FIRST PLENARY SESSION OF THE MAJILIS IN 2023 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MIGRANT
On January 5, 2023, the meeting of Majilis of the Parliament of the RK began with a minute of silence in memory of those who died during the January events a year ago. More detailed information about the January events, which worried the population, was announced during the plenary session. Deputies, ministers, General Prosecutor, representatives of civil society and businessmen spoke during the event about the January events, victims of the events and changes in Kazakhstan during the last year.
Shakhnoza Khassanova, director of NGO "Sana Sezim", spoke on behalf of civil society. Khassanova noted some aspects related to ensuring protection of constitutional rights and safety of citizens, as well as their social rehabilitation. As a member of the Coordination Council for Prevention of Torture, at the invitation of the Commissioner for Human Rights, it was noted that monitoring was conducted after January to determine the conditions of detention of accused and convicted persons in closed institutions and on the impact of the Law "On Amnesty" of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Recommendations were also offered on behalf of civil society, following the statement that the January events once again highlighted the need to address the causes rather than the consequences, and to focus on preventive measures.
