VISIT BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE U.S. EMBASSY IN KAZAKHSTAN, USAID, AND WINROCK INTERNATIONAL

On July 8, 2022 Peter Young, the Acting Mission Director of the US Agency for International Development (#USAID) visited the Legal Centre for Women’s Initiatives Sana Sezim NGO in Shymkent together with Winrock International (@Winrock) Chief of Party of the USAID Safe Migration in Central Asia (SMICA) Ellie Valentine.

After a brief tour of the premises, they learned about Sana Sezim’s work with migrants in Shymkent city and in the Turkestan oblast in southern Kazakhstan. Sana Sezim has been engaged in countering trafficking in persons for more than 20 years and for the past two years has been a partner of the USAID Safe Migration in Central Asia activity.

Peter Young observed that Sana Sezim is a respected NGO recognized for their work in enhancing awareness of the general public on prevention of human trafficking as well as labor and sexual exploitation. The NGO also is known and appreciated for their work in providing assistance to rehabilitate survivors of trafficking and for working effectively with government and law enforcement to protect the rights of those who have suffered from exploitation. Young also noted that “the NGO is a respected partner of the local administration especially in efforts to better inform citizens and migrants of their rights and how to avoid becoming a victim of trafficking.”
