Dr. Kari Johnstone, Acting Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and the U.S. Embassy on February 17 held a virtual meeting with the heads of Kazakhstani NGOs to discuss achievements and areas still needing improvement in the fight against trafficking in persons in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

“We are encouraged to learn of Kazakhstan’s anti-trafficking efforts, including continued investigations, prosecutions, and convictions; updated protocols for labor inspectors that officially granted them authority to identify victims; initiation of payments to survivors of trafficking under the Law on Compensations to Victims of Crime; and extension of all government bodies’ contracts with NGO service providers from one to three years.” - Dr. Kari Johnstone noted.

Dr. Johnstone thanked participants for sharing their experiences and recommendations on countering trafficking in persons, even in the face of considerable ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
