"Providing Legal Assistance Labor Migrants" under the financial support of Open Society Institute, New York

Project timeframe: April 2006 - April 2008
Objective: To provide legal assistance, attract attention to migrant workers' rights, and operate two legal consulting offices in the South Kazakhstan Region.
 

    Results:
  • Operated the confidential telephone hotline and a mobile communication network for labor migrants in the South Kazakhstan Region to receive consultations and emergency assistance.
  • Collaborated with an organization in the Republic of Uzbekistan to build legal awareness in countries of destination and origin.
  • Directed the Expert Council on labor migration in Central Asia to update legislations on labor migration.
  • Observed the rights and freedoms of labor and political migrants.
  • Assisted labor migrants to gain refugee status from UNHCR and local governments.
  • Informed and labor migrants on existing legal and social mechanisms and regulations.
  • Received over 1,500 calls per year on the confidential telephone hotline.
  • Provided over 1,000 legal consultations.
  • Distributed 10,000 informational leaflets and 200 disks on the prevention of human rights violations.
  • Monitored and petitioned the of interests of labor migrants and made recommendations to migration police officials, criminal police, prosecution offices, and others who work with problems of labor migration and refugees.
  • Conducted three educational seminars for 60 law enforcement and migration police officers.
