Regional Conference “No One should be forgotten at Birth”

From 7 – 8 June 2018, the regional conference on the right to establish legal personality and to prevent statelessness “No One should be forgotten at Birth” was held in Almaty. The conference was organized by MJ RK, UNHCR, UNICEF and UNESCAP. The participants were representatives of the governments from the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as well as NGOs from Central Asia.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the issue and to develop joint recommendations aimed at ensuring the birth registration of all children in Central Asia in the context of addressing the problem of statelessness in the region. Representatives of Thailand, Romania and the Russian Federation were invited to participate and to share best practices.

The lack of documents proving identities of parents without citizenship is a problem that has serious consequences for thousands of children in Central Asia, as ensuring the citizenship of children is important for their future.

During the meeting, representatives of five Central Asian states exchanged their lessons learned, which resulted in the development of joint recommendations aimed at preventing statelessness.

This conference provided an exceptional opportunity for the Central Asian states to "give feedback" with the participating countries.

Joint work with the governments of Central Asia will be continued with the aim of protecting the rights of children who are at risk to get into the situation of statelessness.
