Consultative meeting on "Improving mechanisms for cooperation between government and civil society institutions in the protection and support of victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants"

On November, 15, 2012 in Astana, consultative meeting was held in the framework of the project "Strengthening the capacity of Republics of Central Asia in protecting the victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants, especially women and children, and rendering the assistance to them in cooperation with NGOs and civil society ".

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Interagency Commission on Combating illegal export, import and human trafficking of Kazakhstan, the Attorney General, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Supreme Court, the Legislative Chamber of the Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, the National Security Committee, the Customs Control Committee of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labor and Social Security, as well as non-governmental organizations which works in the field of combating human trafficking and smuggling of migrants. This meeting was attended by President of the Legal Center for Women's Initiatives "Sana Sezim", Khadicha Abysheva.

The Consultative Meeting was conducted by the Regional Office for Central Asia of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in the framework of a regional project funded by the European Union and the Government of the United States. The meeting consisted of two parts:

  1. The round table on "Improvement of cooperation mechanisms between government and civil society in the field of protection and support the victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants"
  2. Summing up the results of the project of UNODC in 2011-2012. and approval of the work plan for 2013.

The purpose of the round table is a discussion of the existing mechanisms of cooperation between government and civil society organizations (NGOs), as well as proposals on improvement of these mechanisms.

The purpose of the Consultative Meeting is to ensure transparency in the process of implementation of the project and, according to the project document, UNODC, together with the Interdepartmental Commission on the issues of combatting smuggling and human trafficking of Kazakhstan holds a meeting where national partners are provided by progress report on the implementation of the project for the period from  November 1, 2011 to October 2012, as well as the discussion and agreement of the plan of action on the implementation the project in 2013, taking into account the priorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of combating human trafficking.
