We - Against Child Labor

Public association NGO “Sana Sezim” began the project “Mobilizing the public against the worst forms of child labor” in May 2007.
According to the ILO/IPEC, the number of children, between the ages of 5 and 17, working has decreased from 246 million in 2000 to 218 million in 2004 (a decrease of 11%). Furthermore, the number of children engaged in hazardous work decreased from 171 million to 126 million (a decrease of 26%). The decrease among children, between the ages of 5 to 14, decreased even more (by 33%).
The program is aimed at using effective solutions to address the foundations of the many problems associated with child labor, protect the rights of children, and prevent the worst forms of child labor, through information, advocacy, and social mobilization campaigns in the South Kazakhstan region. The program will use several strategies, namely:
   - Mobilizing the public in select regions of South Kazakhstan, through the creation of a mobile team of three people who will travel to these areas, as well as through the establishment of groups from 50 volunteers who will have a broad information campaign in these regions and in Shymkent. Each of the mobile consultants will maintain contacts with local authorities and the local communities through raising public awareness about eradicating the worst forms of child labor. Each consultant will also oversee one area of Shymkent. Each volunteer will receive a bag of informational material, and a cap with the words “We are against child exploitation”.
   - Direct assistance to children and their families in these areas through raising awareness of the problem of child labor, legal education for children and adults, information on social assistance, and training on the basics of business and micro-credit for children over 14 and their parents. There will be two seminars.
   - Raising awareness and promoting advocacy for the protection of the rights and interests of vulnerable children. This will be achieved by providing company information through outreach activities to employers, workers, government officials, teachers, and other professionals, through interaction with the media, and through the distribution of leaflets and self-adhesive posters containing information on the problem of the worst forms of child labor.
   - Monitoring child labor through the collection of available information, establishing and operating monitoring systems that identify children involved in child labor, through magazines, recording calls and appeals, and through interacting directly with children. A hotline will operate daily from 09:00 to 24:00 when one can get advice on the worst forms of child labor, the law and the consequences of child labor, get information about the services one can appeal to for help. Incoming calls are recorded for further analysis.
The objective of this project is to contribute to the eradicating of the worst forms of child labor through mobilizing the public opinion against the worst forms of child labor, through an extensive awareness campaign on child labor, an employment helpline for children and adults, and through direct work with children, parents, and employers in Shymkent, Maktaaral and Saryagash regions in the South Kazakhstan Region.
